If you’ve spent any time building in Minecraft, you’ve probably noticed that regular stone looks a little too rough for certain builds. Maybe you’re working on a modern house, a castle, or just trying to make your base look like an actual building instead of a pile of blocks.
That’s where Smooth Stone comes in.
What You Need
You only need two things:
- Cobblestone
- Furnace
- Fuel – coal, charcoal, wood, or pretty much any usable furnace fuel.
You don’t need a special crafting table or any rare materials.
How to Make Smooth Stone?
The process actually requires two rounds of smelting.
Step 1: Smelt Cobblestone
Put Cobblestone in the top slot of a furnace and add fuel to the bottom slot.
The result will be Stone.

Take the stone out and keep it for the next step.
Step 2: Smelt the Stone Again
Now put the Stone you just made back into the furnace.
Smelt it one more time.
This time, you’ll get Smooth Stone.

That’s it.
Can You Find Smooth Stone Naturally?
You can find smooth stone in the world rather than making every block yourself. Smooth stone can generate in certain structures and can also appear as part of villages for example in butcher’s house.
But if you need a decent amount for a project, smelting it yourself is usually much easier.
What Is Smooth Stone Used For?
Smooth Stone isn’t just there to make your buildings look nicer.
One of its most useful purposes is crafting a Blast Furnace.
You’ll need:
- 5 Iron Ingots
- 1 Furnace
- 3 Smooth Stone
Put them together in the crafting table and you’ve got a Blast Furnace.
Smooth Stone is also useful as a building block. Its clean, grey appearance works especially well for floors, walls, foundations and modern builds.
And if you’re the kind of Minecraft player who spends three hours designing a staircase, you’ll probably find plenty of uses for it.
Smooth Stone, in its current form, exists since version 1.14.
